Good-bye,
Hat Hair!

January 8, 2007

Beat the cold in style.

Winter has arrived, and girlfriend, it is cold outside. So if you're going to be outdoors, make sure you cover your head with a funky hat, hooded jacket, or large shawl.

You need to wear some type of covering, because you can lose up to 60 percent of your body heat through your head, risking damage to other parts of your body as your system struggles to keep your brain warm. However, a hat can wreak havoc on your hairstyle.

Here's how to cover up while avoiding that dreadful helmet hair!

Watch the Lining
Wool is the best material for providing warmth, but an unlined wool hat can cause hair breakage. Make sure it has a silk or cloth lining.

Wrap and Layer
To preserve your style and eliminate hairdo-wrecking static, try this: Wrap or pin-curl your hair; then tie a silk scarf around your head before donning a hat.

Tuck and Go
To ensure that your hair will be bouncy and full of volume when you take off your hat, pull your hair up to the crown and secure with a clip or ponytail holder; then pull a roomy hood over your dome.

Join the cover-up!
